They met on the set of Slogan. He was 40, she was 22. They wed shortly after their fledgling romance began and for twelve years the unlikely union between lecherous yet lovable pop icon Serge Gainsbourg and well-bred English rose Jane Birkin enthralled a nation.
Je T’aime … Moi Non Plus, which Gainsbourg had originally recorded with Bigitte Bardot during their brief yet torrid affair, was banned by almost every country upon it’s initial release, but did little to stall the song’s success, and became an international hit many times over.
Their record, Serge Gainsbourg/Jane Birkin is one of my all-time favorites, and if anyone were to ever ask me, who, in the history of contemporary pop culture, has looked the best in a pair of blue jeans and a white blouse, I would answer — forthrightly and with very little hesitation — Miss Jane B.
